Don’t lose your data: Back it up
Computer hardware is susceptible to physical failure. In addition, data can be deleted by mistake or even maliciously by malware or an intruder. Perform a full system backup of your computer data followed by regular backups. It is also best to perform a backup before making any changes to your computer.
Practice safe use of applications & services
Delete applications that you no longer use. Old applications are rarely patched and are therefore susceptible to attack. Disable non-essential services running on your computer, especially file sharing and print sharing.

Protect sensitive data
Do not store unencrypted sensitive data (social security number, passwords, credit card numbers, or research data) on your computer or digital devices. Use common sense: If it looks suspicious it is probably malicious. Do not assume that because an email is FROM: someone you know, that they sent it. Lock your device or log off
Set up an automatic lock to enable after a few minutes and be sure to lock your computer manually when you walk away. Log off of your computer and applications when you plan to be away for a break or lunch, and shut the computer down when you are not using it.
