Standard for Hardware and Media Disposal

I. Purpose

The purpose of this standard is to establish the university’s obligation to ensure secure disposal of hardware and media.

II. Scope

It is the joint responsibility of the hardware and/or media owner and the department/college to ensure the secure disposal of hard drives, other digital storage devices and removable media. This standard applies to all media containing data obtained by or from UNC Charlotte staff, faculty, students, associates, affiliates, contractors, volunteers or visitors using UNC Charlotte facilities, services or IT systems.

IV. Standard

When departments are considering the transfer, surplus or donation of hardware and media, they must ensure that data has been properly removed by destroying, purging, or clearing.

The UNC Charlotte Guideline for Hardware and Media Disposal provides additional information for the appropriate disposal of hardware and media.
