Heather Cummens

Job Title

Web Services

In one sentence – what does your job entail?

My team builds, manages, and provides training for the websites in the central web services.

What’s the best advice you can give to someone who just started their career?

Work hard. Don’t be a problem for your manager. Be the person they know will come through regardless, and the one person they don’t have to worry about.

What inspired you to pursue the career you have today?

I am different than most people today. I was a stay at home mom for 15 years. I loved every second of it. When I needed to provide for my family, I prayed to find out what I should do. God told me to study technical writing at UNC Charlotte. I didn’t even know what that was. But I did it. And started working in OneIT once I graduated. Working at the University has been very flexible and rewarding.

What is something that might surprise us about you?

I love small towns and rural life. I come into the city for work, but my life is outside of city spaces. As soon as I am done work, I spend the evenings with my kids. I am usually outside gardening, taking care of my animals. When inside, I am usually crocheting, knitting, or spinning.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

I also teach for the Belk College of Business as an adjunct faculty member. Last semester, I won the Belk College Excellence in Teaching for Part-time Faculty Award.

What’s your favorite indoor/outdoor activity?

There is a fairly long list of things I love to do and feel blessed that I can do. I suppose most fit under raising livestock and raising our own food. There is something really satisfying about eating a meal that you raised, processed and prepared for your family. Also I adore Fiber Arts. I sew, crochet, tat, knit, and spin wool into yarn. I adore fiber and turning it into something beautiful and useful. My current goal is to knit ALL of my socks and sweaters.

When you have 30 minutes of free-time, how do you pass the time?

I usually can be found watching Korean Dramas while I knit, spin or crochet.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I am currently working on Korean. I think it would be wonderful to serve a mission for my church there when I retire.

Are you Team Apple or Team Android?
