Google Gemini Update: Visual Changes, Same Data Protection
If you use Google Gemini, you might notice that the interface looks a bit different. Specifically, the data protection shield icon has been removed from your @charlotte.edu accounts.
We want to assure the UNC Charlotte community that your data is still safe.
How is my data safe?
UNC Charlotte uses Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals. This account type automatically includes strong privacy controls.
Because you are using a school account:
- No Human Reviewers: Real people will not read your prompts or files.
- No AI Training: Google will not use your chats to teach or improve its AI models.
- Official Terms: Your usage is fully protected under Google’s official safety agreements.
How can I verify I am protected?
Since the shield icon is gone, you can confirm your protection in two quick ways:
- Look for the “Edu” text listed on the bottom left below your username.
- Read the disclaimer text at the very bottom of the Gemini window once you enter your first prompt, which states “Your UNC Charlotte chats aren’t used to improve our models. Gemini is AI and can make mistakes. Your privacy & Gemini”.
